Problems with Rockbox on ipod classic

Hi there

I have an iPod Classic 80GB which I decided to install rockbox on.
I had to use the emcore booter and followed the instructions at
http://www.freemyipod.org/wiki/EmCORE_Installation/iPodClassic/PrepareDFULinux

the installation seemed to have gone well and I could boot into rockbox, use
the wheel to navigate between different options and set the time and date.

However, when I connected it to my mac (running OS X 10.6) it said "the disk
you inserted cannot be recognised" so it was not possible to transfer any
files to it. I have the same problem when connecting to linux ubuntu: the
disk does not seem to be formatted. I tried Ubuntu Disk Utility and GParted
to partition and format the disk. But what happens is that it completely
removes the Rockbox installation so I am back to zero. Is there a way of
formatting the disk from within Rockbox? What other alternatives do I have
to make rockbox work?
I am about to admit defeat and go back to the original iPod firmware...

Thanks

M.

This comes from the fact that the ipod is formatted without partitioning
("superfloppy"), which OSX doesn't seem to like.
On Linux you just need to mount /dev/sdb (or whatever), not /dev/sdb1.

To make it work with your Mac, just partition it and format it as FAT32,
then extract the rockbox zip file to that newly-created partition.

Hello again

I have a Sony ICF-C1iPMK2 FM/AM Clock radio which also has a docking station
for an iPod.

However, now that I have installed Rockbox on my iPod classic I can only get
it to play tracks if I connect it through the AUDIO IN terminal.
This means that I cannot charge the iPod on the dock while it's playing as
once I put the iPod into the connector it just charges, giving control
to the device it's connected to. But the sony docking station controls are
not communicating with the Rockbox firmware.
So it seems that my only option to play music and use the docking station is
if I connect through the AUDIO IN and use the iPod battery power.

Any ideas on how I can improve the situation?

Thanks Michael! I did format it in FAT32 and copied the rockbox.zip to the
.root folder, which mac was now able to recognise.
Rockbox seems to work fine on the ipod now and I was able to listen to
tracks and copy files onto it :-)

Have you checked to see if Accessory Power and Line Out are enabled in your

No this is on the actual rockbox web site. I have never had problems
with the files working themselves. They are not being generated on the
web site under extras any more. A code problem maybe.

This may help allow audio playback through the dock.
Controlling the iPod through the dock is not currently possible, some
people seemed to be interested in working on this though.

http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodAccessories is the address to the wiki
page on iPod accessories, not all are supported as there are multiple
"languages" accessories use to talk to iPods and Rockbox does not fully
support them all.

That said, there are multiple things you can try depending on the amount
of effort you want to go through.

1 - It sounds as if your iPod is a entering USB mode upon docking.
Press and hold Menu (has the any-key patch been accepted yet? (I'm
still a bit out of the loop)) while inserting the iPod into the dock to
prevent this.

2 - as Dave Hooper previously mentioned ensure you have line-out and
accessory power turned on in the Rockbox settings.

I'm hopeful at this point you'll have music playback through the dock,
but possibly not control with the dock's buttons.

If not, and you're willing to dig in quite a bit deeper, we can talk
about trying to debug what commands are being used by your dock and what
it would take for Rockbox to support them.

IAP is not supported on the iPod Classic and Nano 2G at all. While there
are no technical roadblocks, nobody seemed to bother enough to clean out
the current IAP mess so far (IIRC bertrik attempted that once), to allow
for target-dependent (non-PP) serial port drivers.

Yea, embarrassed to say I made the silly "Classic = Old iPod" error
myself. :(

I'll go back to work.

Dear Dave, Michael and David

Thank you very much for your replies.

I have indeed selected the accessory power and line out options in the
settings.
I can now play music while plugged in to the radio clock! What did it was
holding the menu button down as David suggested while I was connecting.
From what I can see in the link that David pointed me to, the Sony radio
clock is indeed supported but the remote has been checked on an iPod 4G.
There doesn't seem to be anything about the iPod classic. It seems to work
now, but cannot be controlled by the remote.
It got stuck one track, which made the iPod switch off, but I rebooted it
and it seems to be fine.
